The Tease

Baba Yaga is best known as an iconic figure from Russian folklore, and was co-opted into the Hellboy comics as an enormously powerful supervillain over 20 years ago.

Fans were thrilled, then, when the mythic witch was confirmed to appear in the recent David Harbour-starring reboot, making a brief but memorable cameo appearance opposite the hero.

Between the character's outstanding make-up effects and a post-credits scene which teased Baba Yaga returning to kill Hellboy once and for all in the sequel, the villain was one of the movie's very few bright spots.

Why It Never Happened

Hellboy was widely panned by critics and audiences alike, while failing to recoup even its modest $50 million budget, so all plans for a sequel were immediately eviscerated.

It's especially frustrating as with her startling practical effects and genuinely creepy demeanour, Baba Yaga deserved a front-and-center villainous role. Instead, we got Milla Jovovich's Razzie-worthy turn as Vivian Nimue. Oof.
