Olivier Assayas returns to the theme of women in cinema first touched upon in Irma Vep with Clouds Of Sils Maria, starring Juliette Binoche as movie star Maria Enders, who is asked to play the role of the older woman in the play Maloja Snake. Having earned her reputation playing the younger lead in the aforementioned play, Maria is forced to come to terms with the fact that younger, brighter actresses are waiting in the wings to take her spotlight, not least Jo-Ann Ellis (Chloë Grace Moretz). Clouds Of Sils Maria is a meta-movie through and through, a self-reflexive examination of fame and coming to terms with the changing landscape of cinema.
