8. Sweet Sweetback's Baadasssss Song
Blaxploitation came and went throughout the 70s but still has influence today even though it's basically dead. Quentin Tarantino makes numerous references back to it and Django Unchained is basically a modern re-birth of the blaxploitation sub-genre in the way that he makes his Django character a mix of a noble western hero similar to The Man With No Name and a vengeful hero that hearkens back to Sweet Sweetback or Foxy Brown. The film is a total mess from start to finish but what a glorious mess it is. While Sweet Sweetback is not a very good movie it actually features several innovations to cinema that were rarely seen at the time. It features many jump-cuts and fast-paced montages that are more French New Wave than blaxploitation. It's also notable because Bill Cosby loaned Mario Van Peebles $50,000 to complete the film.
