10 Essential Lessons From Superhero Films in 2013

1. Don't Rush

Worst Offender: Warner Bros for their Batman vs. Superman announcement. With Marvel's The Avengers earning a staggering 1 billion dollars in just a few days, Warner Bros. and DC had to be feeling the effects of jealousy. Their only profitable comic book series, The Dark Knight Trilogy, had ended leaving them with only Man of Steel to combat Marvel. It was even worse as Christopher Nolan's dark, gritty series carried a very strict no superheroes, no superpowers rule. WB could not throw Nolan's Batman into the Justice League without contradicting his universe. Man of Steel released this year to very mixed reviews from both fans and critics alike. The film's box office intake only met expectations instead of exceeding them. With a $225 million dollar budget, plus marketing, MoS was not the smash-hit WB was hoping from. With Marvel in Phase 2 already, WB did the only thing they could do; immediate reboot Batman and place him in the MoS sequel. Initially, the announcement sounded fantastic. Fans everywhere rejoiced that the big, blue Boy Scout and the Caped Crusader would finally join forces on the big screen. 2015 could not get here soon enough.... until Ben Affleck was casted as Bruce Wayne/Batman. The excitement died almost as fast as it started. Not only were comic nerds enraged, the general public too expressed their negative reaction to the announcement. Multiple petitions appeared at social media outlets and boycotts were threatened towards the film. Fans were, and still are, unhappy with the casting. Batfleck was just the beginning though. Soon after, rumors surfaced Wonder Woman, the Flash, and Nightwing would appear along with Lex Luthor and possibly Doomsday. Only Wonder Woman, The Flash, and Lex Luthor have been confirmed thus far. Gal Galdnot was cast as Wonder Woman and set fans in another Affleck-like rage. Her thin body frame and lack of acting experience is the basis for their hatred. Unsatisfactory casting is not the only problem from WB. The Cinematic Universe is mess right now with no clear direction. Instead of building a cohesive universe film by film, WB is throwing everything they can fit into Batman vs. Superman to play catch up with Disney/Marvel. Justice League is set for a 2017 release date only two years after BvS. In 2016, the Flash is set to receive his own film, but no other superhero. The Justice League will have to introduce the remaining cast. WB is rushing to reach the heights set by Marvel Studios. They are smashing everything in their path and WB wants the Avengers level money. If WB wants to copy Marvel's success, then actually copy their formula, but just to start the Cinematic Universe. It took Marvel 4 years and a lot of risk-taking for their ultimate pay-off. They gave unknown superheroes their own films, hired unorthodox talent to write and direct, and most importantly, were patient. Best Example: Marvel Studios: Is any explanation necessary? Honorable Mention: Sony Pictures for Expanded Spider-Man Universe Announcement WB is not the only studio rushing to create Avengers-esque blockbusters. Sony Pictures announced this year The Amazing Spider-Man universe would be vastly expanded with the inclusion of the Sinister Six and Venom. Both will receive their own spin off films and eventually interact with Spider-Man. Sony has done right announcing these spin off films, but The Amazing Spider-Man 2 is crossing past Spider-Man 3 territory with Green Goblin, Rhino, Electro and the rumored Spider-Slayer Drones. Sony Pictures is right in creating separate films, but they are also taking the WB route of cramming as many characters as they can into one film. ......................................................................................................................
