2. The Black Hole

It won't come as a surprise to hear that Christopher Nolan counts Star Wars among his favourite films - after all, he's a human being just like the rest of us. More interesting is his guilty pleasure, the much lesser known science fiction released two years after Luke Skywalker's first adventure, The Black Hole. Nolan recalls the first time he saw the film, saying, "even to a nine-year-old Star Wars fanatic this seemed pretty uneven, but some of the special effects still impress, and it boasts one of the most unexpectedly weird climaxes in cinema history. I actually had to rent it as an adult just to check that I hadn't made up the whole ending." It's fitting that many decades later he would go on to direct a science fiction film of his own also featuring a black hole and with an ending that could prove to be equally weird to a 9-year-old sitting in a cinema...
