10 Essential "Retro" Genre Movies You Have To See

1. Turbo Kid

While it's easy to wonder why it took a trio of directors (François Simard, Anouk Whissell and Yoann-Karl Whissell) to put together Turbo Kid, there's no denying that their efforts paid off - few retro-style movies capture the essence of the genres they're referencing with quite this much attention to detail. Often described as "Mad Max meets BMX Bandits", Turbo Kid features a roster of dystopian rogues and warriors who all look like they've leapt out of a straight-to-video action movie. Throw in an eye patch-wearing Michael Ironside and some outrageous gore effects for good measure and the nostalgia factor is cranked up to 110%. Nitpicking viewers could complain that it's rough around the edges, but in many ways this is a part of the charm in much the same way as Black Dynamite's faux shoddy filmmaking added to the appeal. If recent years are anything to go by there should be more awesome retro genre movies coming soon. What other great retro-style genre movies have you seen? Why not tell us about them in the comments?
