10 Essential Summer Blockbusters That Aren't Part Of A Franchise

1. Tomorrowland

The first non-sequel/remake/reboot/whatever film to arrive this season is also one of the most anticipated films of the year. Brad Bird, director of The Incredibles and Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol, is calling the shots on this one, with George Clooney set to star. The rest of the cast includes Hugh Laurie, Kathryn Hahn and Judy Greer. Even with the release date just a couple of weeks away (it comes out on May 22, and has the subtitle 'A World Beyond' in the UK for reasons which aren't entirely clear), not an awful lot is known about the film. That makes it not only refreshing because it€™s something original, but also because it€™s a movie that€™s happy not giving too much away before audiences have the chance to go and see it (take note, Terminator Genisys). What we do know is that it concerns enthusiastic teenager Casey (Britt Robertson) and jaded inventor Frank (Clooney) travelling to the titular land, a place that exists somewhere in time and space and is known in their collective memory. Oh, and there€™s a flying bathtub. Bird has shown in his animated features that he can craft exciting, original stories, and with Ghost Protocol he displayed his live action chops. He has co-written the film alongside Damon Lindelof (don€™t let that put you off), and it is inspired by the Tomorrowland area of Dineyland, and a mysterious box labelled 1952, said to be from the Walt Disney Imagineering archives. If that€™s not enough to get you interested, just consider the fact that Bird reportedly turned down the job of directing Star Wars in order to make it... Which of these original movies are you most excited to see? Share your thoughts below in the comments thread.
