10 Even More Movies With Ridiculously Subtle Foreshadowing

When a movie spoils itself, but you don't even realise.

Foreshadowing can be difficult to pull off, but when done well, it can be one of the most satisfying aspects of watching a film. Essentially, the storyteller is clueing the audience in on what will happen, without them fully knowing it. Only with the full picture, or possibly seeing the full picture two or three times over, can this truly be appreciated.

Some films are more subtle than others when it comes to deploying this cinematic technique, and so it's no surprise that, on occasion, the viewer may end up missing a moment that foreshadows a later event in a given film. The most subtle pieces of foreshadowing tend to be the most compelling, though, given that they're layered effortlessly into a given scene and take a keen eye to spot.

WhatCulture has delved into this subject previously, not just once but twice, but still there is a pool of yet-to-be-discussed foreshadowing that, while there to be seen, can easily be missed upon first viewing. It's a difficult skill to master, but these films made it look easy.

10. Caesar Handing A Knife To Will's Dad - Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes

With Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, set several hundred years after the death of Caesar (Andy Serkis) in War for the Planet of the Apes, the true vision of the franchise has been realised.

Everyone knew the context of the previous films, and it was no secret that this was the direction things were going, but that didn't stop some subtle foreshadowing right at the very start of the trilogy.

As something almost of a mirror image to Caesar's early journey, learning new things and developing his brain, Will's father Charles (John Lithgow) - who was essentially Caesar's grandfather - was struggling with Dementia, and his condition was declining.

At one point he forgot that he didn't drive, and at another he held his knife the wrong way round. When Caesar turned it around for him and passed it back, this wasn't just a small moment of the ape helping his family member - it was a precursor to the shift in power that was about to come.
