4. Marcus Returns To The Farmhouse - The Last Exorcism

28 Weeks Later
Lionsgate

This criminally underappreciated found footage film follows Cotton Marcus (Patrick Fabian), a reverend who makes a living performing fake exorcisms on supposedly "possessed" people, and who finally wishes to expose his fraud to a documentary film crew.

He spends most of the movie investigating the case of timid farm girl Nell Sweetzer (Ashley Bell), whose father believes she is possessed by Satan.

In the third act, Marcus ultimately seems satisfied that he's exposed Nell's apparent possession for the psychological trauma that it is, her behaviour actually a result of her deep shame at becoming impregnated by a local boy.

But just as the film appears to wrap up, Marcus learns that the apparent father of the child was gay and barely knew Nell, prompting Marcus and the film crew to take a last-minute detour back to the farmhouse, where they discover a Satanic birthing ritual taking place.

This renews Marcus' resolve that exorcisms are real, and he heads into the flaming remnants of the ritual to combat the Satanic figure, presumably being engulfed in the process, while the film crew are quickly murdered by the crazed locals. The End.

Because horror movies love downer endings, there was no way anything good was going to come from heading back to that farmhouse. They should've just left the town and never come back.
