5. Pure Imagination - Willy Wonka And The Chocolate Factory

The Sound Of Music
Paramount Pictures

Just like the Harry Potter series, Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory is a film adaptation of a popular children’s book. When reading Roald Dahl’s novel, kids could only use their wildest imagination to envision such a marvellous chocolate factory, which is why there is an even greater anticipation to see the novel come to life on screen.

Mel Stuart’s movie is faithful to the source material, right down to the characterisations and narrative. He also makes the smart decision of not showing any interior parts of Wonka’s chocolate factory until halfway through the film, when all the main characters are established, creating a greater build up as to what lies behind the mysterious factory walls.

And our first look into the factory (after the visitors have signed the contracts) starts with a beautiful candy land, complete with a chocolate river, edible grass and gigantic mushrooms. It’s an enchanting view because it is just how we all imagined it to be when reading the book.

As Willy Wonka sings the “Pure Imagination" number, we feast our eyes on a dazzling wonderland that we can only dream of visiting. Knowing how well the film nailed the confectionary room, it captivates the audience with eagerness as to what the rest of Wonka’s factory has in store.
