The Sound Of Music
20th Century Fox

Back in the mid-1960s, people fell in love with Julie Andrews for her delightful performance as Mary Poppins in the 1964 movie of the same name. It was a musical which showcased her singing and dance ability, as well as her effortless charm. Fans already knew they were in for a treat when Julie would play the lead role in The Sound of Music, just one year later.

And it didn’t take very long into the movie before fans knew they’d love it just as much as Mary Poppins, if not, more so.

It begins with sweeping landscapes of Austrian mountains and countryside. There is a slight air of mystery as to what is about to happen next. Two minutes in and the camera zooms in on the lead heroine, Maria, as she confidently performs the title song whilst exploring the outdoors. Julie Andrews’ gives a beautiful vocal performance and immediately sets an upbeat tone for the story. Within the opening, you just know it’s going to be a thoroughly enjoyable family film, much like Andrews’ previous musical Mary Poppins.
