Underrated Bollywood horror fantasy Tumbbad tells the story of Vinayak, a boy who grew up in a village that became cursed after the locals began to worship a god that was shunned by its own mother - and legend has it, this god, Haster, has an unlimited supply of gold coins.

Vinayak may start as the film's main protagonist, but he slowly morphs into its villain, with his greed becoming insatiable after he starts to steal some of this gold. He's not even generous with this wealth, instead choosing to keep making himself richer and richer while throwing everyone else under the bus. Vinayak even trains his own young son how to steal from a god, such is the lack of care he has for any dangers associated with this.

While Haster may have a monstrous appearance, it's Vinayak's cruelty that makes him the villain. So, when he falls into debt and takes his son with him down into the god's dwelling, it's not at all surprising when he bites off more than he can chew.

Attempting to take all of Hastar's gold, Vinayak's arrogance leads to a fatal mistake with the god gets the better of him. However, in a moment of clarity, and with clones of Hastar circling him, Vinayak realises he must sacrifice himself to save his son - thus, he's turned into a horrible creature, reflecting the monster he'd become as a result of his greed.
