Few films have slit their own throat - terminated themselves, even - quicker than the sixth Terminator, Dark Fate, which opened with a prologue sequence set three years after the events of Terminator 2.

In the scene, young resistance leader John Connor (Edward Furlong) is suddenly gunned down by one of the many T-800 Terminators (Arnold Schwarzenegger) sent back in time by Skynet to kill him, all while his mother Sarah (Linda Hamilton) helplessly watches.

For fans invested in the series and John's status as the future leader of the human resistance against Skynet, it felt like a slap in the face - a cruel twist which added little to the movie beyond cynical shock value.

The outcome was that most fans were turned against the movie in its first three minutes, and it certainly didn't help that the rest of the film basically soft-rebooted the franchise by replacing John with a new resistance leader, Dani Ramos (Natalia Reyes).

Dark Fate, whether intentionally or not, trivialised Connor's place in the franchise - or it would have, if not for the fact that it bombed at the box office, ensuring it received no sequels and has since been canonically ignored by many fans.
