Although the above image gives the impression of the world's strangest courtroom drama, the face-to-face between Batman and the Joker in the interrogation room is one of the most intense scenes from the entire franchise, not just Christopher Nolan's trilogy. Beginning with a tense exchange between the Joker and newly-minted Commissioner Gordon, the Clown Prince of Crime seems almost bored by what he believes to be the 'good cop, bad cop' routine. And then the light goes on. The Joker reveals his master plan; both Harvey Dent and Rachel Dawes have been kidnapped and Batman can only save one of them, thus breaking his only rule that he doesn't kill. This dilemma leads to a savage beating, but the Joker laughs it off knowing there is nothing Batman can do to hurt him. The brilliance of this scene is that despite coming from opposite ends of the moral spectrum, the similarities between the Joker and Batman are clear in that they are both capable of being violent sociopaths that operate outside of the law. It truly is a rare thing for one of the most exciting moments in a $150m blockbuster to come from a simple exchange of dialogue between two iconic characters, and even Christopher Nolan has claimed it to be his favorite scene in the movie.
I don't do social media, so like or follow me in person but please maintain a safe distance or the authorities will be notified. Don't snap me though, I'll probably break. I was once labelled a misogynist on this very site in a twenty paragraph-long rant for daring to speak ill of the Twilight franchise. I stand by what I said, it's crap.
