One of the criticisms consistently leveled at Christopher Nolan is his ability to direct action scenes, and while it is true that many of the hand-to-hand combat scenes in the Dark Knight Trilogy can be choppily edited and often hard to follow, the director acquits himself much better when it comes to vehicular set-pieces. This chase in particular is five minutes of action, excitement and even humor that features a seamless blend of practical effects, CGI and miniature work. In an effort to save Katie Holmes' Rachel Dawes, Batman is forced to race to the Batcave with most of the Gotham Police Department in hot pursuit. The scene starts with a neat exchange between the Caped Crusader and Jim Gordon, with the latter's reaction to seeing the Tumbler one of the movie's funniest moments, with a couple of more incredulous reactions towards the 'black....tank' thrown in for good measure. The vehicle chase brilliantly showcases the vast firepower and capabilities of the Tumbler, with Batman showing off a multitude of nifty gadgets in order to avoid the authorities in a scene that eschews the CGI overload of other summer blockbusters to provide a sense of crunching realism.
I don't do social media, so like or follow me in person but please maintain a safe distance or the authorities will be notified. Don't snap me though, I'll probably break. I was once labelled a misogynist on this very site in a twenty paragraph-long rant for daring to speak ill of the Twilight franchise. I stand by what I said, it's crap.
