5. Harry Potter And The Order Of The Phoenix
I had to include at least one Potter film in this list. The series gets progressively darker from the third book onwards, but the darkest and most morally repugnant scenes are in the fifth instalment. The morality of Umbridge's method of punishment is certainly questionable. The fact that I find most troubling however is that she got a teaching job in the first place. I know Dumbledore was somewhat bypassed by the Ministry of Magic, but even so. Perhaps the appointment of Umbridge will instil an inherent distrust of government in all who read the book as a child. Maybe the Ministry's actions go some way towards explaining the London riots? Who knows. This is also the book in which we meet Neville's parents for the first time. This is arguably the darkest element of any of the seven books. The idea of two people being tortured into permanent insanity is rather more than morally questionable.
