A modern day Scream Queen at the peak of her powers is Maika Monroe.

Mainstream viewers will know Monroe best for appearing as the President's daughter in that god awful Independence Day sequel, but to horror fans, she will always be Jay from It Follows.

The target of a mysterious entity transmitted via intercourse, Jay spends the entire film running away from the monster whilst trying to work out how to kill it.

This sounds like the world hasn't move on much from the "damsel in distress" days, but both Monroe and the movie itself do very well to present Jay as an empowered character who fights back against her enemy.

Monroe followed up her performance in It Follows with 2022's Watcher, where she once again plays a woman being pursued by a creepy force. Although this one is a man, rather than a weird sex monster.

Much like It Follows, Watcher also explores the stigmas facing women in the modern era through the medium of horror. Not only must Monroe's characters go up the evil creatures, but also the evils of society that have made it much harder for women to be taken seriously.
