10 Famous Movie Characters Ruined By Elaborate Backstories
3. Willy Wonka
In Tim Burtons Charlie And The Chocolate Factory movie, we got a modern retelling of the Roald Dahl tale that was previously adapted into the wonderful Gene Wilder-starring film. One of the big differences between the two movies is that Burtons take attempts to justify Willy Wonkas existence by giving him a bigger backstory. We learn at the close of the movie that Johnny Depps Willy Wonka had a troubled childhood with a strict father called Wilbur Wonka, a dentist played by Christopher Lee. Willy was forbidden from eating sweets and given massive braces that looked like a torture device from a Saw movie. Although this only takes up a short portion of the movie, it still diminishes Willy Wonkas appeal somewhat. Arguably, he functions better as a complete enigma that cant be explained or understood in any major way. Instead, with the addition of a somewhat tragic childhood, he becomes a little bit more generic. Just another movie character with daddy issues and a chip on his shoulder. Ah well... we'll always have the original.
