10 Famous Movie Characters Ruined By Elaborate Backstories
2. Wolverine
Wolverine is one of the few characters to get two different movie origin stories played by the same actor. But while X-Men 2 kept the characters enigma in check by only revealing a few tantalising details, X-Men Origins: Wolverine took things way too far. In Wolverines standalone prequel, Gavin Hood presented us with a hugely elaborate backstory that went into mystique-dispelling detail about everything from his leather jacket to his motorcycle. Wolverine functions very well as a mysterious stranger, so witnessing all this minutiae felt a little jarring. Far worse than that, though, was the crowbarring in of important elements. The scene explaining why he chose the name Wolverine, for example when his girlfriend tells him a lengthy story about a wolf and the moon feels totally forced and ultimately fails to develop the character in any meaningful way. How they explain his memory loss, similarly, just comes across as lazy writing. Of all the elaborate backstories on this list, Wolverines is perhaps the most infuriating. X-Men 2 gave us the perfect amount of information, but X-Men Origins: Wolverine completely overloaded the character with far too much detail. Due to Days Of Future Past, though, quite a bit of Origins may not be considered canonical anymore. We doubt thered be many complaints if that turned out to be the case.
