10 Famous Movie Moments Made Possible By Totally Ignoring History

10. The Hilarious "Mooning The English" Sequence Could Never Have Happened Because The Scots Didn't Wear Kilts In 1280 - Braveheart

Braveheart, above all, is not a movie that takes things like "history" very seriously - it's obvious from the very first time that we hear Mel Gibson's Scottish accent that we're in for the super duper Hollywood telling of the William Wallace story. For all its historical errors, then, it's still a well-made and highly enjoyable flick - and, hey, at least that famous scene where the Scots moon the English by lifting up their kilts could've happened in real life, right? Scots definitely wore kilts! Well, uh, no, actually: the kilt didn't come into "fashion" until about 400 years after the events in Braveheart took place. This is such an oversight on Mel Gibson's part, in fact, that historian Sharon Krossa even went on to say that the depiction of kilt's in the movie are akin to "a film about Colonial America showing the colonial men wearing 20th century business suits, but with the jackets worn back-to-front instead of the right way around." We'd love to see that film.
