Sale Price: $156,000

One of the most brilliant things about Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings trilogy is the handcrafted feel that emanates from every set, every costume, and every prop. He made Middle Earth feel like a real place, and because of this, there are a lot of leftover props from the series that have been sold off in the years since.

One of the most recent sales was in 2013, when Frodo's sword, Sting, was bought for a massive $156,000 (£121,000). The weapon was used by Elijah Wood throughout the production of the films, and was valued at somewhere between $100,000 and $200,000, so it landed smack-bang in the middle of its estimate.

While the prop won't glow blue when orcs are nearby, it's still the real deal, and came complete with those intricate patterns and details on the blade and the hilt.

Danny has been with WhatCulture for almost nine years, and is currently Doctor Who Editor and WhoCulture Channel Manager, overseeing all of WhatCulture's Whoniverse coverage. He has been writing and video editing for 10+ years, and first got a taste for content creation after making his own Doctor Who trailers and uploading them to YouTube (they're admittedly a bit rusty by today's standards). If you need someone to recite every Doctor Who episode in order or to tell you about the making of 1988's Remembrance of the Daleks, Danny is the person to ask.
