10 Famous Movie Props That Sold For Ridiculous Prices

5. Luke's Lightsaber (Star Wars)

Lucasfilm

Sale Price: $450,000

Because a lot of different lightsabers were built during the making of the original Star Wars trilogy (some for the actors, some for their stunt doubles, and some as backups) there have been quite a few sold off at auction over the years.

But, by far, one of the biggest saber-sales took place in 2017, when one of the props used by Mark Hamill in Episodes 4 and 5 - an item which came from the collection of producer Gary Kurtz - fetched almost half a million dollars. The blue blade was bought by the Ripley company, which is known for its Believe It or Not! brand, which includes books, museums, and TV shows.

While prop lightsabers are nowhere near as impressive as onscreen lightsabers - mainly due to the fact that the sound effects and magical glow are added in post-production - a price that high, while nuts, does seem about right for an official item from one of the biggest franchises in entertainment history.

Danny has been with WhatCulture for almost nine years, and is currently Doctor Who Editor and WhoCulture Channel Manager, overseeing all of WhatCulture's Whoniverse coverage. He has been writing and video editing for 10+ years, and first got a taste for content creation after making his own Doctor Who trailers and uploading them to YouTube (they're admittedly a bit rusty by today's standards). If you need someone to recite every Doctor Who episode in order or to tell you about the making of 1988's Remembrance of the Daleks, Danny is the person to ask.
