Despite being known as one of the most important and ground-breaking performers of his generation throughout much of his career, the always eye-catching Laurence Olivier was also somewhat known for his rather bombastic and anything but subtle depiction of characters over the years.

When it came time for John Schlesinger to helm the eventually critically acclaimed Marathon Man, however, the English director knew he needed something a little more understated when it came to the role of Dr. Christian Szell. So, after the titanic thespian had boomed his way through his lines in one particular scene involving himself and Dustin Hoffman butting heads on screen, Schlesinger requested he keep hold of Olivier's services a little while longer whilst the team got Hoffman's coverage for the exchange.

This led to Olivier simply rolling off his lines in a fairly casual and effortless manner. And though the actor would see through this tactic of bringing his work down a few notches, he appreciated the way his more subtle performance was encouraged before being captured on film. And he ultimately picked up another Academy Awards nod for his troubles too.
