10 Famous Movie Villains That Had Understandable Motives

8. Cypher - The Matrix

Cypher might seem selfish, but he's in a position that is impossible to imagine, a strange man approached him and told him he could take one of two suspect pills, not the best start to an evening, one feels. Upon being released from the oppressive computer program that simulates Earth, Cypher was awakened to the real world, where machines rule and harvest humans for their body warmth to run themselves. Cypher's actual existence is rather bleak, he's on a dank ship with an obligatory biblical name and is surrounded by what seems like a collection of cyberpunk Big Brother contestants. He has to eat a bland vitamin supplement meal, one that would probably make Oliver Twist himself deny more, and he's constantly being hunted by artificially intelligent tyrannical robots. Is it really so bad that he simply wants to be plugged back into The Matrix and live out a life that isn't constantly threatened by floating metal squids? Is being in The Matrix even that bad? Yes, the machines rule the real world, but at least the unwilling humans that are plugged in aren't suffering. In fact, are there any benefits to living in the real world besides the knowledge that everything you know is a lie and you're being forced to fight a war that you have very little chance of winning? Cypher's not a coward, he just has common sense.
