10 Famous Movie Villains That Had Understandable Motives

4. Leatherface - The Texas Chainsaw Massacre

If you consider Leatherface's situation, he becomes more of a tragic villain than an outright bad guy. Leatherface was born with mental retardation and was raised by a family of lunatic cannibals, that really has to mess with someone's view of the world. Leatherface's learning disabilities and lack of a compassionate family have led him to be incapable of differentiating between right and wrong, there are heavy implications throughout the series that he was sexually, physically and mentally abused by his family and he has an innate fear of severe punishment if he disobeys them. Leatherface's acts of cruelty are much easier to comprehend when you remember that he is almost like an animal, he's certainly been raised like one. He associates disobeying his family with pain and suffering, and he doesn't realize that what he's being forced to put people through is a bad thing, he has no concept of morality because no one never taught him. It's actually rather upsetting the more you think about it that someone has to go through this kind of torture, if Leatherface was regularly seen by doctors and had been given an education then there's no doubt he'd be an upstanding member of society.
