10 Famous Movies That Would Have Been Better Off With Their First Choice Actors
5. David Bowie As Captain Hook - Hook
If you were casting a Peter Pan movie, and someone asked you who would be able to do the role of Captain Hook in their sleep, it'd be David Bowie, wouldn't it? Just look at him: he was born with the swagger, accent and weirdness to play this role perfectly. Apparently, Steven Spielberg thought so, too, which is why he approached David Bowie to play Captain Hook in 1991's Hook. Let's be honest here: this is probably the best casting idea Spielberg ever had for this film, which is otherwise a complete mess. Hoffman, again, is pretty good in the role and puts in an admirable performance, but he just doesn't chew up the scenery in the way only Bowie could. Anyone who's seen Labyrinth can confirm just how crazy Bowie can go whilst still delivering a memorable performance. Unfortunately, Bowie turned down the role, citing his unhappy experience making the aforementioned Labyrinth, and the long production period spent abroad making The Last Temptation of Christ. Oh, what could have been, huh?
