10. Vanilla Sky (2001)
You Know It As... That strange, mind-altering movie which had a deformed Tom Cruise running around trying to work out what the hell was going on, whilst occasionally hooking up with Penelope Cruz and talking his feelings out with Dr. Kurt Russell. Directed by Cameron Crowe (
Jerry McGuire, Almost Famous), this odd mix of science-fiction, romance and mindy left audiences feeling perplexed and cold on first release, but the movie - about a wealthy New York publisher who goes on a twisted odyssey of self-discovery - has its fair share of supporters.
It's A Remake Of...Open Your Eyes (1997), a Spanish-language movie by director Alejandro Amenábar, who later went on to direct
The Others in 2001 with Nicole Kidman.
Open Your Eyes was far better received upon release than its US counterpart - many critics deemed it a "masterpiece." The plot is very much the same, though the ending of
Vanilla Sky is rather different (and Crowe's movie is set in New York and not Madrid). Interestingly enough, Penelope Cruz plays the same character in
both movies, presumably because it means she could get paid without having to learn any new lines.
