Imagine what a world in which the alternate history of Inglourious Basterds actually transpired would look like. Imagine if we were taught in school that the last world war wasn’t won through strategy but in an act of hyper-violence that took out Hitler and some of the nastiest Nazis en masse in a movie theatre.

In the Tarantino-verse that’s exactly what did happen and therefore violence is not only accepted and normalised but justified and celebrated as it helped take down some of history’s biggest despots. In this alternate timeline, people are almost completely desensitised to violence.

Hence why there’s a rather casual attitude towards violence amongst the characters in Tarantino’s Realer Than Real Universe like Vincent Vega’s whoopsie-daisy reaction after accidentally shooting Marvin in the face in Pulp Fiction or Mr White and Mr Pink’s matter-of-fact approach to killing in Reservoir Dogs.

The alternate timeline also explains why the films in the Movie Movie Universe like Kill Bill, From Dusk till Dawn and Grindhouse are so hyper-violent even by Tarantino standards. Violence played a major role in the Realer Than Real Universe’s history and so it plays an important part in its culture and entertainment too.
