Brie Larson was unveiled to the public as the new Captain Marvel at San Diego Comic Con 2016, but not until after Marvel had gone through a list of other candidates.

Emily Blunt was heavily rumoured to be the frontrunner for the role, having previously auditioned for the part of Black Widow in 2008. She bowed out due to scheduling commitments, but it actually turns out that Blunt was never contacted by Marvel for the role of Carol Danvers. Speaking to Screen Crush, The Quiet Place actor confirmed that she had never met with Marvel for the part, and that the rumour had in fact been made up.

"Oh, no, nobody ever called me about it. [Laughs] It was all untrue!"

Others who were rumoured at one time to take on the role include Jessica Chastain and Charlize Theron, and though the part ultimately went to Larson, one would hope Marvel haven't given up on recruiting those who were also in the running for a future role in the series.
