10 Fascinating Hollywood Stories You Didn't Know
4. Wes Craven Got His Big Break Producing Porn
From A Nightmare On Elm Street to Scream, Wes Craven is a master of horror, but before he was ever given a movie to direct, he had to get his foot in the door by producing a movie starring Marilyn Chambers, who went on to become one of the most famous porn stars of the 1970s.
Narrated by a goateed, wide-eyed doctor who drones on as Chambers goes diving and discovers an alternative use for a dandelion, Together (aka Sensual Paradise) purports to be an investigation into “the mystery of man and woman.” The New York Times wasn’t convinced, and called the picture “a load of drivel, slapped together as a movie.”
Directed by Sean S Cunningham (Friday The 13th), Together was distributed by Hallmark Releasing, who also funded the duo’s next collaboration, The Last House On The Left. Craven subsequently returned to porn with The Fireworks Woman (“What happens when a brother and sister break the ultimate taboo?”), on which he took the pseudonym “Abe Snake”, so at least he has a sense of humour about the the industry.
