Twelve years after Goodfellas, Martin Scorsese returned to the origins of the American gangster with Gangs of New York, starring Daniel Day-Lewis and Leonardo DiCaprio as gang members in the chaotic formative years of the Big Apple. Day-Lewis plays Bill "the Butcher" Cutting, an apt name for a man who uses violence as regularly as he carves up pigs for chops, who takes Amsterdam Vallon (DiCaprio) under his wings before learning of his planned betrayal. Needless to say, when Vallon's attempt at murdering Bill goes awry, the Butcher gives him one hell of a beating.
