Nicolas Winding Refn is a director more than familiar with making movies about the primal instincts inherent in man - from his early Pusher movies, in which violence is a first resort for drug dealers, to Valhalla's exploration of the brutality of early mankind, his films are centrally concerned with uncontrollable destructive forces. Perhaps his best film on this subject, Drive's graceful camerawork and memorable score create a dream-like atmosphere which makes the punctuations of violence all the more effective. Easily the most shocking scene occurs in an elevator, when the unnamed stunt driver/part time getaway driver (played by Ryan Gosling) beats a hitman to death, repeatedly stomping on his head. The expression on Irene's face as she watches on seems more than appropriate. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i5ufgkJ-uVE
