10 Film Characters Who Were Secretly The Villain All Along

8. Grandpa Joe - Charlie And The Chocolate Factory

Charlie and The Chocolate Factory
Warner Bros.

Grandpa Joe secretly being kind of the worst is pretty low-hanging fruit in terms of secret villains in films. But it's also delicious fruit, so let's get into it.

Charlie's household is incredibly poor. They drink cabbage soup like it's going out of style, and they almost all share one bed - although this may also being a strategic move so they can share body head, because that house is definitely cold. The reason we're told they live like this is because nobody in the family can work but Charlie's father - especially poor Grandpa Joe, who can't walk.

Only, when Charlie gets the golden ticket, Grandpa Joe gets up and dances around like he's auditioning for his lifelong dream at the West End. He's fine for the rest of the film, and although you're maybe supposed to think his happiness somehow fixed his damaged legs, it's far more likely he was just fibbing the whole time.

And so he happily lets Charlie skip about the factory, seemingly unbothered by the many other children who are mangled in the factory. Maybe just... keep him close to you, instead of presuming the kid is moral enough to survive this PG Saw scenario.
