10 Film Directors Who Desperately Need A Win
4. Josh Trank
Josh Trank was only 27 when Chronicle hit theaters, and after the found footage superhero movie earned over $125m at the box office against a $12m budget and scored near-universal acclaim in the process, it looked like there was a new cinematic wunderkind on the block.
Then came Fantastic Four, which effectively torpedoed is entire career before it had ever really gotten started. There were countless tales of extensive studio-mandated re-shoots, reports of behind-the-scenes clashes and rumors of some truly bizarre behavior on Trank's part, and when the movie was released it bombed spectacularly at the box office and soon became known as one of the worst comic book movies ever made.
Trank was also dumped from Star Wars as a direct result, leaving his reputation in tatters. His first movie since the Fantastic Four debacle is biopic Capone with Tom Hardy in the title role, but that isn't even getting a theatrical release and is heading straight for digital instead.
If the reviews are kind enough, it could open a pathway for Trank to rehabilitate his career. If it gets slaughtered, then there might not be any way back for a filmmaker who once showed so much promise and potential.
