10 Film Directors Who Desperately Need A Win

5. M. Night Shyamalan

The Sixth Sense marked one of the greatest breakout movies of the modern era, earning almost $700m at the box office as well as earning Academy Award nominations for Best Picture, Director and Original Screenplay, and instantly ascending to iconic status by delivering an all-timer of a twist ending.

However, less than a decade later M. Night Shyamalan had virtually descended into self-parody, with his subsequent output simply repeating similar tricks to increasingly diminished returns. He tried to reinvent himself as a director of big-budget blockbusters, only to fall flat on his face with the one-two punch of The Last Airbender and After Earth.

The Visit and Split saw him rehabilitate his reputation by going back to basics and working with smaller budgets, but the hotly-anticipated Glass saw him go full Shyamalan again in the massively underwhelming Unbreakable crossover fans had waited years for.

Over his last three movies we've seen both sides of Shyamalan, and whatever he decides to do next could be the make-or-break movie of his career. Either he reinvents the wheel yet again and pursues something wholly unique and original, or he continues being the guy known for big twists and nothing else.

I don't do social media, so like or follow me in person but please maintain a safe distance or the authorities will be notified. Don't snap me though, I'll probably break. I was once labelled a misogynist on this very site in a twenty paragraph-long rant for daring to speak ill of the Twilight franchise. I stand by what I said, it's crap.
