10 Film Endings With Disturbing Implications You Totally Missed

7. Total Recall: Quaid Gets Lobotomised

Django Unchained Jamie Foxx
TriStar Pictures

Arnie's Douglas Quaid topples an evil corporation, gets his dream girl and terraforms the planet Mars. Not a bad day's work in the world of Total Recall... fade to white.

Wait a minute. White? What kind of a movie fades to white? The kind that isn't all it seems, that's what.

There's overwhelming proof that Total Recall was all a dream, and it goes beyond the colour of its fade-in.

The most compelling piece of evidence is that blue sky overhead in the final scene. It harks back to the sequence where Quaid is being prepped for his mind implant - one of the technicians can be overheard saying "that's a new one, blue sky on Mars". That simply cannot be a coincidence.

So what if Quaid didn't really get his ass to Mars. Isn't the idea of him returning home to a '90s Sharon Stone a happy enough ending?

No, actually, because that's unlikely to be happens since Arnie was most likely lobotomised at Rekall. Uplifing or what?
