10. The Toys (Toy Story) €“ Psychologically Torture And Ruin The Life Of A Deprived Child

Beneath the happy exterior of sentient toys and Randy Newman songs that is Toy Story, there lurks a cautionary tale for us all. One that says if you don't treat the toys well, they are going to mess up your life. This is the tale of Sid and the toys that ruined his life. Sid is portrayed as a bully, who tortures the toys and is mean to his sister. But let's look at the facts. He has no friends, no parents that we see and all of his toys are seemingly broken ones that have been thrown out. His neighbour is Andy, who has all the best toys, all the friends and the perfect family life. No wonder Sid has issues. But Sid has a creative side and he lets that out in the only way he knows how, by taking apart and putting back together toys. OK, so technically he is torturing these toys, but Sid doesn't know that. It's no different to taking apart any other inanimate object. To judge him on those grounds is just plain wrong. But to the toys, and the audience, that doesn't matter. The toys reveal to Sid how they are alive and he has been torturing living beings all this time. Predictably, Sid has a breakdown, and the bully gets his comeuppance. The next time we see Sid he has at least found a job as a bin man, presumably after years of psychological therapy. So that's the toys for you. Hurt them, even if you didn't know what your doing, and they will destroy your mind and stop you from ever fulfilling what little potential your deprived background would allow you.
