8. Timon and Pumbaa - The Lion King
If Simba is the Hamlet of The Lion King, then Timon and Pumbaa are his Rosencrantz and Guildenstern. And as much as we all love Hamlet, Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead is the more interesting piece. It introduces the idea of thinking about what minor characters are doing while they're not on screen. While Simba's off whining about killing his dad and stuff, what are Timon and Pumbaa up to? Besides spying on Simba and Nala during their intimate moments, because that was not cool. But seriously, Timon and Pumbaa. How are they friends? Do a meerkat and a warthog seriously just wander around Africa hanging out? I mean, they've got a pretty sweet philosophy, but is that really all they do? I want to know more. Simba always came off as a boring, whiny little guy to me, and the movie was crying out for the zest that this crazily mismatched duo brought in spades.
