10 Films Booed At Cannes That Went On To Win Many Awards

7. Crash (1996) – David Cronenberg

Like David Lynch, Cronenberg is well known for pushing the boundaries of all that is good and decent. From a half man, half fly to Viggo Mortensen wrestling naked in a bath house, there are many images courtesy of him that will never leave the collective film world’s consciousness.

Crash split audiences in the same way that L’Avventura did in 1960. It was exploring sex on screen in a way that was overtly licentious for the time. Much like Gaspar Noe’s latest film Love, which is ultimately a 3D porn film, has no doubt split audiences once again. Although there have been no reports of booing from the premiere of Love it did go one further and spark a brawl. However that was caused outside the auditorium between people who were fighting to get in.

But back in 1996, people still had a shred of decency when it came to sex, and they let it be known after the screening of Crash.

In fact the film was so risqué for its time that it won best alternative adult feature film at an adult film awards; very much straddling the line between porn and art.

Notable Accolades:

Other than winning porn awards, Crash actually won the Jury Special Prize at Cannes and swept the board at the now defunct Genie Awards in Cronenberg’s home country of Canada.
