Disney's recent run of live action adaptations have been doing well, despite not being well received by critics. That could be all set to change as we approach the release of Mulan.

The adaptation has been under intense scrutiny, as casting took place in the aftermath of the whitewash scandal. An online petition appeared voicing concerns of over 100,000 signatories. Thankfully, the fears were unsubstantiated as Disney took extra care in casting. The search spanned five continents and 1000 auditions before the studio settled on Liu Yifei.

Director Niki Caro polarised fans of the original animation when she announced that Mushu would be left out of the adaptation. Citing the poor reception to the character by Chinese audiences, the decision was appreciated by most, but understandably left some disappointed. Eddie Murphy's performance may have been fantastic, but the character was sadly rooted in stereotypes and no longer deemed appropriate for a modern release.

Aside from the omission, the new version will remain heavily faithful to the classic animation. Following the story of Mulan as she attempts to fight in place of her sick father. Posing as Hua Jun, she must face gruelling tests of strength as she tries to become the strongest warrior China has to offer.

Mulan's release in China was already cancelled, but the worldwide release has now been postponed with no new date announced.
