2. The Avengers
The Avengers or Avengers Assemble depending on your country of origin, was the culmination of Marvel's superhero franchises in one big blockbuster that I'm sure needs no real introduction. Fans of Marvel's various franchises were skeptical that an Avengers movie in which they all came together could work. There were fears that the big personalities of the group such as Captain America, Thor and Iron Man would clash and that major characters would get sidelined in favour of those that were more popular. Thankfully, it turned out that any doubts were unfounded and The Avengers became the most successful film at the box office of all time. Of course, it should have been clear that any doubts would clearly be unnecessary as soon as Joss Whedon was announced as the film's director. The former creator of Buffy the Vampire Slayer was no stranger to handling ensemble casts and he expertly handled not only the central characters, but also the many side characters, especially that of Clark Gregg's Agent Coulson, whose death unites The Avengers in their fight against Loki. If there's one criticism, it's that Jeremy Renner's Hawkeye spends a large portion of the movie as a brainwashed villain, but he definitely makes up for it when he comes back to the good side and he would definitely get further exposure in the sequel. It may be cheating to have included a film that is so clearly going to have a sequel down the line, however, if there is one franchise that has proven it has the staying power to last for not just one further sequel, but many more, then it is The Avengers. For sheer depth combined with huge entertainment value, I believe this more than deserves its place here.
