3. 21 Jump Street
21 Jump Street was a reinvention of a classic TV show that starred Johnny Depp, who himself makes a brilliant cameo towards the end of the film, and followed an undercover assignment given to two rookie Police Officer's to infiltrate a group of drug dealer's at their old high school. Whilst Jonah Hill is a more believable casting choice for an undercover operation in a high school, Channing Tatum is clearly too old to be there, yet this is part of what makes the film's humour work so well, as well as the flawless chemistry between these two male leads. Most of the laughs in 21 Jump Street come from the complete role reversal that they discover at the school. Channing's character, Jenko, believes he will be as popular as he ever was, but it turns out that Jonah Hill's Schmidt becomes the popular kid at the school, not least because Jenko forgets his undercover name and the characters swap identities and classes. 21 Jump Street was born out of a great concept and blossomed into one of the contender's for the funniest film of the year, perhaps the standout moment being when they are forced to take the very drug they have been sent to take off the market, HFS, and become giggling wrecks, wreaking havoc around the school and the athletics track. Whilst Jonah Hill is known for his comedic turns in films such as Superbad, Channing Tatum was the real revelation here, proving to the world that not only was he just as hilarious as his co-star, but he could create real warmth and sympathy when required too. The film finishes with their Captain promising them a new undercover role in a College, something which would surely lead to even more laughs in the future sequel, with them legally allowed to do (almost) anything they want!
