10 Films President Trump Needs To Watch
9. Gremlins 2: The New Batch
Daniel Clamp, the billionaire owner of Clamp Tower, Clamp Center and the Clamp Cable Network, may be the most sympathetic screen character inspired by Donald Trump. According to director Joe Dante, Clamp was more villainous in the original script but actor John Glover made the character so likable that he ended up becoming a sort-of hero.
Clamp’s state of the art office building is little more than a symbol of its owner’s wealth and ego: nothing works, and employees like Marla Bloodstone and Dr Catheter were apparently hired for their ability to look sinister. Among all the technical glitches are some very real gremlins that quickly spawn an army and take over the building, attacking anyone left inside.
Realizing the PR benefits of saving the city, Clamp helps destroy the gremlins, but once they’ve been vanquished he isn’t sorry to see his building wrecked. “Maybe it wasn’t a place for people,” he says. “It was a place for things. You make a place for things, things come.”
Moral: even billionaires can change their ways. Are you listening, Mr T?
