10 Films That Could Join The Billion-Dollar Club In 2016
5. The BFG
For people of a certain age – in the UK in particular – Roald Dahl was practically a third parent; the kind who told you the bedtime stories you really wanted to hear.
Long before J.K. Rowling brought a little magic back into the world, the British children’s author was penning classics like Matilda, James And The Giant Peach and Charlie And The Chocolate Factory, and The BFG remains one of his best-loved books.
The story of The Big Friendly Giant, the little orphan Sophie and their adventures that take them from Giant Country to Buckingham Palace has delighted the young and young at heart for over 30 years. As has Steven Spielberg, who’s now adapted the children’s book for cinema and brought new BFF Mark Rylance aboard as the BFG.
Having just debuted in Cannes and with the early reviews suggesting Spielberg has created a good old-fashioned whimsical romp, The BFG looks promising. However, it also arrives slap bang in the middle of the summer blockbuster free-for-all, opening the week after Independence Day: Resurgence and directly opposite The Legend Of Tarzan. As such, a billion is probably a long shot. Spielberg and Dahl are a natural fit and children’s films often punch above their weight though, so you never know.
