10 Films That Could Join The Billion-Dollar Club In 2016
6. Independence Day: Resurgence
Finding Nemo isn’t the only blockbuster that will see a belated sequel arrive this summer – Independence Day: Resurgence, the follow-up to Roland Emmerich’s silly, winning event movie that dominated the summer box office in 1996, will arrive in theatres with over a week to spare before those 4th of July fireworks ignite. And with Emmerich back at the helm, fireworks are a given.
The German director’s bucket list apparently includes reducing every landmark on Earth to either a fiery or waterlogged CGI ruin at some point or other. And having kept his gunpowder mostly dry since bringing the world to its knees in both 2004’s The Day After Tomorrow and 2012 in, er, 2009, Resurgence sees him return to the characters and world of his greatest triumph. Or what will be left of the world, at least.
Waiting a long time to make a sequel can be a dicey proposition – Dumb And Dumber To and Sin City: A Dame To Kill For are testament to that, while the Ghostbusters reboot already looks DOA. But Jurassic World might be a better comparison in this instance, even if Resurgence surely won’t remotely threaten to emulate that film’s incredible box office assault from last year. Nevertheless, ID4Eva ought to make more than enough cash to justify the proposed third outing.
