10 Films That Got Actors Taken Seriously

8. Hustlers - Jennifer Lopez

Perhaps rather unfairly Jennifer Lopez has been nominated 10 times at the Golden Raspberry Awards, the only awards ceremony to celebrate bad acting.

Starring in a string of financially successful yet critically maligned romantic comedies of the 00s, Lopez became typecast as the romantic lead which sniffy critics and the Golden Raspberry Awards mocked relentlessly. While she had the occasional celebrated film in the late 90s, most notably as one of the voice cast in Antz and starring alongside George Clooney in Out of Sight, she was not given many opportunities to showcase her dramatic chops in the following two decades.

However, 2019 offered Lopez a morally complex and showy role as part time exotic dancer part time thief Ramona Vega in Hustlers. Not only did Lopez defy expectations but she outshone her co-stars the fantastic Constance Wu and the scene stealing Cardi B while eliciting serious talk of an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actress. While in the end this was just talk, mere weeks after Hustlers was released in cinemas the Super Bowl capitalised on Lopez's popularity by announcing her as the headline of 2020's halftime show rejuvenating her music career in the same way she had done with her film career.

An avid cinephile, love Trainspotting (the film, not the hobby), like watching bad films ironically (The Room, Cats) and hate my over-reliance on brackets (they’re handy for a quick aside though).
