10 Films That Got Actors Taken Seriously

7. Get Out - Daniel Kaluuya

Tom Hanks, Philadelphia
Universal Pictures

Daniel Kaluuya may be one of the most promising actors of his generation, with an Oscar nomination to his name aged just 29, but his rise to internationally recognised movie star was anything but conventional.

Getting his start in Skins as Posh Kenneth, Kaluuya demonstrated his ability as a natural funnyman and branched out across other British TV comedy with cameos in various sketches from Psychoville to Harry & Paul. Despite proving he could hold his own on the big screen alongside Johnny English Reborn co-star Rowan Atkinson, it was not until his standout role as Bing in Black Mirror that people began noticing his value as a dramatic actor.

As Black Mirror became the latest Netflix property and its episodes were brought to a global audience Jordan Peele noticed the actor's star making turn in 'Fifteen Million Merits' which subsequently led to his casting as the lead of Get Out. While Peele took a gamble casting the English actor mainly known for small screen comedy, Kaluuya was able to utilise his comedic talents and showcase his emotional range simultaneously.
