10 Films That Had To Be Altered Because Of Real Life Tragedies
6. The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Parts 1 & 2 - Philip Seymour Hoffman Accidental Overdose
The two-part finale of Jennifer Lawrence's star-making vehicle The Hunger Games continues to follow her character Katniss Everdeen, who has now managed to survive the Hunger Games twice. She finds herself back in her home District of 13 where, under the leadership of President Coin and the advice of her trusted friends, Katniss reluctantly agrees to become the symbol of a rebellion against the oppressive Capitol.
Philip Seymour Hoffman had just two scenes left to shoot as Plutarch Heavensbee when he was killed by mixed drug intoxication on February 2, 2014, one for Mockingjay - Part 1 and another for Mockingjay - Part 2. Before the films were released, director Francis Lawrence admitted that, while it was briefly discussed, he and his team were always against the use of GCI:
“He had two scenes with dialogue that were left and we decided we didn’t want to try any kind of digital trickery with him, so we rewrote his scenes and gave his dialogue to other actors. He was one of the greatest actors, I think, of all time and I just think to try to fake a Philip Seymour Hoffman performance would have been catastrophic and I would never want to do that.”
