1. Rosemary's Baby
Roman Polanski has never been a traditional director which perfectly suits the story of Rosemary's Baby. He is able to take a completely normal setup and find the terror just beneath the surface. The setup is actually almost painfully normal which only serves to make the revelation that satanism is a key in the plot much more shocking. The way that Polanski completely subverts the feelings of happy, middle class existence with the evil of the devil is truly an amazing achievement. Rosemary's Baby can be viewed in many ways. It can be a straight up horror film or an allegory for women's right which perfectly reflect the times in which it was made. It's this duality that helps it remain one of the most disturbing films of all time but also one of the most influential. Thanks for reading and I'd love to hear any films you thought should have made the list.
