10 Films That Should Never Be Remade
9. The Green Mile
The Green Mile is one of the most emotionally moving films of all time.
Based around the memories of former prison officer Paul Edgecomb, played by Tom Hanks, we are transported into Cold Mountain Penitentiary just as John Coffey (played by the late Michael Clarke Duncan) is sentenced to death for the rape and murder of two young girls.
John is shown to have supernatural abilities, which he uses to cure cancer and bring another inmate’s pet mouse back to life, shortly before his execution, he discovers that one of the other inmates, William Wharton, had actually committed the crime that John had been found guilty of.
John reveals this truth to Paul and transfers his abilities into the prison officer. Unable to change the sentencing, John is executed for a crime that he had not committed, and Paul lives the rest of his life in quiet remorse.
The performances from the cast are powerfully moving, and offer a wistfully dark depiction into the life of an innocent death row inmate. No attempt at remaking this piece of cinematic brilliance could ever come close to capturing the raw emotion on display.
Sentimentality, sadism, wonder, despair, regret; this film has it all.
